How the United Upgrade List Works (2026 Guide)

The United upgrade list runs on one published order. Your Premier status comes first, then your fare class, then the date and time you requested the upgrade.

United starts clearing that list up to five days before departure, in status order, and keeps working until three hours before the flight. After that, the gate agent takes over.

What are the four ways to upgrade a United flight?

United sorts its upgrade options into a few buckets. It is cleaner to picture four named paths, because that is how travelers actually search for them.

The seat you are aiming for has a name. United Premium Plus is its premium economy cabin, while United First and United Polaris are the domestic and long-haul business-class products.

One recent change: since February 1, 2026, Premier members can use Complimentary Premier Upgrades on award tickets booked with miles, which United previously restricted.

A fifth path covers partner trips. Star Alliance Upgrade Awards let you use miles to upgrade up to four companions on select partner airlines, up to 24 hours before departure.

How does the United upgrade list work?

United processes every upgrade request against one order. This single ranking decides who clears first, no matter which path put you on the list.

In plain English, that is status, then fare, then time. Status is the first big lever: above the cardmember tiers, whoever holds higher Premier status generally clears first, and invitation-only Global Services sits at the very top.

When everything else is equal, the earliest request wins, since date and time of request is United's final tiebreaker. That is the whole reason to get on the list the moment you book, and for a group, United sets priority by the highest Premier status on the reservation.

When do United upgrades clear?

Two clocks run here, and readers often blend them. Keep them apart.

Complimentary upgrades clear on a status ladder. United's upgrades page says it will "start processing upgrades five days before the flight in status level order."

The higher your status, the earlier the system reaches you, which is another reason status dominates the whole list.

The second clock is the universal cutoff. United's automated system processes requests until three hours before departure, then gate agents take over.

How do you check your position on the United upgrade list?

What you see depends on the window. From about 30 days out the app shows your position and the seats remaining, and within two days of departure it adds the seats available and how many passengers have checked in.

How do you improve your United upgrade chances?

Most of what moves the list is locked in when you book. Read as advice, the list order becomes four levers, ranked by impact.

1. Status. The biggest lever, since a higher Premier tier means both an earlier clearing window and a higher slot on the list.
2. Fare class. At equal status, a higher fare bucket clears first, and on the points path it also costs fewer PlusPoints to reach business.
3. Route and aircraft. United bases availability on how many upgrade seats it expects on a flight, not on the open seats in the map, so a small premium cabin on a busy route clears far less than a large one on a quiet leg.
4. Timing of your request. The last tiebreaker, so getting on the list right after booking beats identical-status, identical-fare travelers who waited.

How do United PlusPoints work?

PlusPoints are United's upgrade currency for its top two Premier tiers. Platinum and 1K members earn them and spend them to move up a cabin.

Points come from reaching status and flying past the 1K threshold. And since January 1, 2026, 1K members can also earn PlusPoints through eligible United co-branded card spend, a change The Points Guy reported.

You request a PlusPoints upgrade at booking or on an existing trip. If space is not open, United puts you on a waitlist that closes at your flight's check-in cutoff time.

The cost of an upgrade has followed a fixed chart through 2026. Third-party guides (AwardWallet and UpgradedPoints, as of Aug 2026) report the figures below, which United does not publish as an official rate card.

The biggest swing is your fare bucket. The same Newark-to-Europe Polaris seat is reported at 40 PlusPoints from standard economy and 80 from a discounted fare.

PlusPoints run on their own clock, separate from the rules for how airline miles expire. They stay valid through the program year you earn them, the following year, and the very start of the year after.

Can you buy or bid for a United upgrade?

Yes to buying, no to bidding. United sells paid cabin upgrades but runs no passenger auction.

On the buy side, any traveler on United or United Express can buy United Premium Plus, United First, or United Polaris when space is open, with money or miles, from ticketing until check-in.

Day-of, if seats remain, you can buy at a kiosk or from a gate agent, though miles are not accepted there, only credit cards.

These paid prices are dynamic. United tends to discount unsold premium seats near check-in and at the gate, so checking often is wise.
