United Award Price Drops: Rebook for Fewer Miles (2026)
A United award price drop is money you can reclaim. MileagePlus prices awards dynamically, so the miles a flight costs can fall after you book it.
When that happens, you change the reservation or cancel and rebook the same seat for fewer miles. The difference returns to your MileagePlus account.
United charges no award change or redeposit fee as of September 2026, which is what makes it free to attempt. Here is how it works, and where the fine print sits.
How does a United award price drop actually work?
United does not publish an award chart. It prices its own flights and partner flights dynamically, so the miles a seat costs move with route, date, and demand (One Mile at a Time, 2026).
The price is never locked to a chart. The award you already booked can later appear for fewer miles, the same way a cash fare can dip after you pay.
What sets the number is a short list, and none of it is fixed at the moment you book.
- Route and cabin: premium cabins and long-haul routes swing the most in absolute miles.
- How far out you are: Saver space can tighten as departure nears, then reopen if demand softens (One Mile at a Time, 2026).
- Demand on your date: a quiet flight tends to price lower than a full one.
- United metal or a partner: both are priced dynamically, and each moves on its own inventory.
Does United charge award change or redeposit fees?
No. United charges no fee to change or cancel an award ticket, and no fee to redeposit the miles, regardless of your Premier status (The Points Guy, April 2026).
That waiver covers flights within the U.S. and Puerto Rico, between the U.S. and Mexico or the Caribbean, and international flights leaving the U.S. (The Points Guy, 2026).
It does not depend on your tier. A general MileagePlus member and a Premier 1K member face the same zero fee on an eligible award change or cancel (The Points Guy, 2026).
$0
United removed these fees in 2022, and they have stayed gone as of September 2026 (One Mile at a Time).
Zero fees is what makes a price drop worth acting on. You are only swapping a higher mileage price for a lower one, with nothing lost in between.
How do you rebook a United award for fewer miles?
The sequence is the same one you would use to reprice a cash fare, adapted for miles (our repricing guide covers the cash version). You compare today's price against what you paid, then rebook if it dropped.
Recheck the live award price
Search united.com for the same flight, date, and cabin you booked, signed in so you see the mileage price. Dynamic pricing means it may differ from what you paid (One Mile at a Time, 2026).Compare it to what you paid
If the new price is lower, note the gap in miles. Any positive difference is miles you can get back, since there is no change or redeposit fee (The Points Guy, 2026).Rebook the lower price
Change the reservation to the cheaper award, or cancel and rebook the same seat. Both paths work because United charges no fee to do it.Confirm the miles came back
Check that your MileagePlus balance reflects the lower price and that any cash taxes and fees were refunded to your original card (NerdWallet, 2026).
Whether you change the existing reservation or cancel and rebook, the result is the same. The lower mileage price sticks, and the difference returns to your account.
What does United refund when you cancel an award?
A canceled award, done before departure, gives back two separate things through two separate channels.
| What you get back | Where it goes | Notes (as of Sep 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| The miles | Redeposited to your MileagePlus account | No redeposit fee on a standard award (NerdWallet, 2026) |
| Taxes and fees paid in cash | Refunded to your original form of payment | United does not add fuel surcharges to awards (One Mile at a Time, 2026) |
| A $125 charge, only on a no-show | Applies if you did not cancel before departure | Cancel in time and this never applies (The Points Guy, 2026) |
Keep the two channels straight when you check. Miles land back in your MileagePlus balance, while the cash you paid for taxes returns to the card you used, not as miles.
The exact time United takes to process the miles and the cash refund is not something the airline spells out publicly, so check your account and card rather than assume it is instant.
United cash fares move on their own timetable and reprice through a different path; our United repricing guide covers that cash-side mechanic.
Award repricing on United stays a manual habit: you recheck the price yourself each time you want to compare. Autopilot does not reprice award tickets, but on a United cash fare booked directly, adding your trip lets Autopilot track the fare and reprice the reservation when it drops.
What about Basic Economy and partner awards?
Two cases sit outside the clean version above, and both are worth knowing before you count on a rebook.
Basic Economy is the strict fare. It is excluded from United's fee-free change and cancel rules, so rebooking for fewer miles relies on a standard award rather than Basic Economy (The Points Guy, 2026).
Partner awards are priced dynamically too, but change and cancel handling can differ by partner, and some changes route through United's call center. Confirm the terms for your specific itinerary with United before you rebook.
Why keep watching a United award after you book?
Because the price you paid was only today's price. Dynamic awards keep moving after purchase, and the only cost of checking again is a minute of your time.
There is no penalty for looking and finding nothing. If the price held or rose, you leave the booking exactly as it is, out only the minute it took to check.
The same logic runs across programs. Delta and other carriers price awards dynamically too, which is why the Delta version and the broader award price drop guide follow the same shape.
No fee, both directions
If you are holding miles while you wait for a better price, it is worth knowing whether airline miles expire before you sit on a balance.
Award prices are not fixed, so neither is the number of miles you spend. Booking is the start of the price story on a dynamic award, not the end of it.
