Why does the Southwest points price follow the cash fare?

Because there is no award chart to insulate it. The points price is derived from the fare rather than from a fixed table of destinations and seasons.

Southwest says so on its own how to redeem points page, and the Rapid Rewards terms list the inputs: destination, time, day of travel, demand, fare class, and the point redemption rate.

So a points booking inherits the volatility of the cash fare. That cuts against you while you are shopping, and in your favor once the ticket is already yours.

What a Southwest points price drop returns, by fare product

Start with the distinction that decides everything below. A cash cancellation on the lower fares produces a dated flight credit, while a points cancellation produces points.

Points land back in the Rapid Rewards balance they came from. They do not arrive carrying the six or twelve month clock that a Basic or Choice flight credit does.

Every row carries no cancel fee. Southwest's fare information and rules state that all fare types are eligible for cancellations without a fee, as of September 2026.

Basic is the row to read twice. Southwest's help pages describe Basic as not changeable, and its fare rules permit a change only alongside an upgrade to Choice, Choice Preferred, or Choice Extra.

On a Basic award that matters less than it sounds. You cancel, the points come back, and you book the cheaper seat as a fresh reservation.

How a Southwest points rebooking actually works

There are two paths, and the fare you bought decides which one is open to you.

   Price the same flight again in points

   Signed in, pull up the flight you already hold and price it fresh. You are comparing today's points number against what your reservation shows.

   Change the booking if your fare allows it

   On Choice, Choice Preferred, and Choice Extra, Southwest's help pages state it does not charge fees to change flights, and a change to a lower price settles the difference in points back to the booking account.

   Cancel and rebook if you are on Basic

   Basic cannot be changed as a Basic fare, so you cancel, let the points return, and book the cheaper seat again. Southwest notes that a Basic fare can be cancelled only if the whole round trip is cancelled, or the Basic fare is upgraded first.

   Confirm the points landed and the taxes were handled

   Check the Rapid Rewards balance, then check which refund option Southwest applied to the taxes and fees before you call it done.

Running this by hand means checking the same flight over and over, and the checking is the part that does not scale.

What happens to your seat when you rebook in the assigned-seating era?

This is the genuinely new variable. Southwest opened assigned-seat booking on July 29, 2025, for flights from January 27, 2026, so a rebooking now involves a seat map.

What you are entitled to is set by the fare you buy, not by how early you booked.

• Basic: a standard seat, assigned at check-in.
• Choice: a standard seat you select at booking.
• Choice Preferred: a preferred seat, or any standard seat.
• Choice Extra: an Extra Legroom seat, or any seat.

Rebooking means selecting again from whatever is still open on that flight. Southwest's assigned seating page states that on same-day changes your original seat and boarding group are not guaranteed.

So open the seat map before you commit. A drop worth a couple of thousand points reads differently if the aisle you liked has gone.

Southwest also notes that a seat bought separately from the fare cannot be cancelled on its own. Cancelling the flight returns that seat purchase as a flight credit.

What happens to the taxes and fees on an award ticket?

Award tickets still carry government charges. The September 11th Security Fee is $5.60 per one-way trip originating in the United States, capped at $11.20 per round trip.

Southwest's Rapid Rewards terms make those charges the passenger's responsibility, payable when reward travel is booked.

Where the money goes on the way back is the part worth reading carefully.
