Marriott Cancellation Policy 2026: Deadlines, Fees, Points

There is no single Marriott cancellation policy deadline. Marriott sets it per hotel and per rate, and the rate you booked is the one that governs.

That is Marriott’s own framing. Marriott’s help pages state that the policy "is determined by the specific hotel and the rate type selected during booking."

What is the Marriott cancellation policy?

Marriott publishes a method rather than a number, telling you where your deadline lives and leaving the value to the property and rate.

The operative line: you "must cancel your reservation before the deadline specified in your Rate Details, which is always based on the Hotel’s local time."

Hotel local time

The time zone every Marriott cancellation deadline is measured inMarriott, Sep 2026

That decides real money. A 6 p.m. deadline in Tokyo passes while it is still the previous morning in Chicago. Marriott adds that policies "can change based on the date of your stay or special events."

How many hours before check-in can you cancel a Marriott reservation?

Marriott does not publish a chain-wide answer, which is worth saying plainly.

Outside observers describe a common range rather than a rule. Upgraded Points, last updated September 2024, reports Marriott "will often require your booking to be canceled 48 to 72 hours (2-3 days) in advance before your check-in."

How far ahead room prices move is a different question from how long you can wait, and we cover it in hotel price drops after booking.

Which Marriott rates cannot be cancelled?

The prepaid family closes the door, and Marriott states the consequence directly. A current Prepay and Save offer, scoped to three hotels in Greenville, South Carolina, says those rates "are Prepaid and are Non-Refundable. If cancellation of reservation takes place, guest will forfeit total room charge plus tax."

That scoping is the point, not a footnote. Prepaid terms are published per offer, so this is an example of the family, not a rule for every prepaid rate.

The same terms still permit a change inside the window, allowing reservations to "be changed within 7 day to arrival date," with availability and rate subject to change, while the money stays non-refundable.

So changing and cancelling are separate permissions. Losing a refund does not mean losing the right to move the stay.

The Advance Purchase label is not a policy

A separate Advance Purchase offer running to December 2026 describes "advance booking up to 7 days prior to arrival and if your plans change last minute, you can still move your reservation to a different date."

Its published terms do not address refunds at all. That absence is not permission to assume one, and it is not a non-refundable rate either.

What does a late or same-day Marriott cancellation cost?

Marriott publishes the shape of the penalty but not the amount. Its help pages say a reservation cancelled after the deadline may incur a fee "typically equivalent to one night’s room and tax."

Note the hedges: "may" and "typically." The charge sits with the hotel, so your Rate Details holds the binding figure.

A same-day cancellation is almost always a late one, because most deadlines fall at least a day before arrival. On a prepaid rate the question does not arise, because the money is already forfeited.

What happens if you simply do not arrive

Here Marriott does publish a chain-wide number, and it is the only one in this article. Its help pages say guaranteed reservations, meaning those secured with a credit card or other confirmed billing method, "are typically held until 6:00 a.m. local hotel time the following day."

6:00 a.m.

After that the reservation "will be cancelled and a No-Show Fee will be charged." The amount is not chain-wide: it "is determined by the specific hotel’s Cancellation Policy."

So a very late arrival is not a no-show. If your flight lands at 2 a.m. the booking is still live, and telling the hotel beats assuming the room is gone.

Hotels are one side of your trip. On the flight side, a cash fare booked directly can fall after you pay, and that gap is money you are owed back. Once you add your trip, Autopilot reprices the reservation when it drops.

How do Marriott Bonvoy award cancellations and point redeposits work?

Marriott’s change and cancel guide says that when a points or Nightly Upgrade Award booking is cancelled inside the policy window, "your points and/or awards will be returned to your account immediately."

Immediately

How fast Marriott says points and awards return when cancelled inside the policy windowMarriott, Sep 2026

The window is not Marriott’s to set. The Bonvoy program terms say "the standard guarantee and cancellation policies of a Participating Property will apply to Award Redemption Stay reservations," including charges for late cancellation and no-shows.

What a late award cancellation actually costs

Section 3.2.d of those terms states that if a member cancels outside the permitted period, "the Participating Property will charge the applicable cancellation fee to the credit card provided by the Member at the time the reservation was made and the Points that were redeemed will be re-deposited into the Member’s Account."

Nightly Upgrade and Free Night Awards

Nightly Upgrade Awards carry a rule that catches people out. Marriott says once a NUA is confirmed, "you must cancel the entire reservation to have the award returned."

Free Night Awards behave better than expected. Marriott states a cancelled award "will be added back to your account with the same expiration date as the original deposit," so it returns without gaining time.

Where do you find your exact Marriott cancellation deadline?

Marriott documents four places, and they agree with one another.

  1. Before you book, open Rate Details

On the Select a Room page, click "Rate Details" and read the Cancellation Policy section "for the specific date and time the reservation must be cancelled to avoid a fee." Prepayment requirements appear here too.
  2. On marriott.com after booking

Sign in, open My Trips, click Details on the reservation, then Rate Details. Without an account, use Find a Reservation with your confirmation number, last name and check-in date.
  3. In the Marriott Bonvoy app

Tap Trips, select the reservation, then scroll through Reservation Details to Cancellation and Modification Policy. Marriott notes the view varies by app version and platform.
  4. In your confirmation email

The terms sit in a "Rate Details & Cancellation Policy" section near the bottom. Keep this copy, because it is the version you can produce if a charge is queried.

What Marriott does not publish

Naming the gaps is more useful than filling them. As of September 2026, these are left to the property.

  • A standard number of hours. There is no universal window. Any figure quoted elsewhere is an observation of common practice.
  • The exact late-cancellation charge. Marriott describes it as typically one night’s room and tax, hedged with "may" and "typically."
  • The no-show fee amount. Marriott publishes the 6:00 a.m. hold, then leaves the fee to "the specific hotel’s Cancellation Policy."
  • A points redeposit fee. Marriott publishes none, so there is no chain-wide points penalty to quote.
  • Any 24-hour grace period after booking. Nothing on Marriott’s pages establishes a window running from the moment you book.
  • Differences between its brands. No published table compares deadlines across brands, so a Ritz-Carlton and a Courtyard should not be assumed alike.

None of this is unusual for a group this size, and none of it argues against prepaid rates. It argues for reading the rate line first.

Choosing where to concentrate your stays involves more than flexibility, and we weigh the rest in our comparison of Marriott, Hilton and Hyatt. The chain-by-chain picture sits in hotel cancellation policies by chain.

The habit that prevents most bad outcomes here is small. When the confirmation lands, find the cancellation date and diary it a day early.

Deadlines are the part of a booking that moves without announcing itself. While yours is open the room is still a decision, and cancelling and rebooking at a lower rate stays available.
