Hotel Status Match: How It Works in 2026

A hotel status match hands you elite status with a new program because you already hold it somewhere else. As of September 2026, three of the six largest programs publish one.

Hilton Honors, Wyndham Rewards, and Choice Privileges run a standing public match. Marriott, Hyatt, and IHG handle it case by case, by targeted offer, or through a partner.

Here is what each program documents right now, what proof it asks for, and what you have to stay to keep the tier.

What is a hotel status match, and how is it different from a challenge?

A hotel status match is a swap. You show one program proof of elite status with a competitor, and it grants you a comparable tier.

A status challenge runs the other way. Nothing arrives up front, and you earn the tier by staying a set number of nights.

• Match: status first, on proof of your existing tier. Choice Privileges works this way, with no stays required.
• Challenge: nights first, status after. Marriott's unpublished offer grants nothing up front and asks for no proof of status elsewhere.
• Both: a trial tier on approval, then nights to keep it. Hilton and Wyndham run this hybrid, the most common shape in 2026.

Which hotel programs offer a hotel status match in 2026?

Three publish one and three do not, and that split matters more than any night requirement. Read the table as of September 2026.

Best Western Rewards also publishes a match, carrying your current tier through the end of the following year.

How does the Hilton Honors status match work?

Hilton runs the most straightforward public match. You apply while logged in, upload your proof, and Gold arrives for a 90-day trial.

Keeping it is the second half. Six paid nights inside those 90 days holds Gold, and twelve reaches Diamond.

Both thresholds came down in 2026, from 8 nights for Gold and 14 for Diamond, so check the date on any figure you rely on.

Complete the Gold run and the status carries through March 31, 2028, close to two years from one 90-day push.

The application asks for two things: proof of your current tier with another hotel program, and proof of a recent stay.

How does the Wyndham Rewards status match work?

Wyndham publishes the most detailed terms of the group, which makes its FAQ the number to work from.

The tier you receive depends on the tier you already hold.

• Diamond: Marriott Bonvoy Gold, Platinum, Titanium, or Ambassador Elite; Hilton Honors Gold or Diamond; Hyatt Globalist; IHG Platinum or Spire Elite.
• Platinum: Marriott Bonvoy Silver Elite; Hilton Honors Silver; Hyatt Discoverist or Explorist; IHG Gold Elite; Choice Gold or Platinum.
• Gold: plain membership in Marriott Bonvoy, Hilton Honors, Hyatt, IHG, or Choice Privileges.

Then the clock starts. Matched Platinum expires 90 days after your verification email unless you complete seven qualifying nights, and matched Diamond unless you complete fourteen.

Finish the nights and the tier runs through December 31 of the following calendar year, per Wyndham's status match FAQs.

Two more terms sit on the same page. You may apply no more than once per calendar year per hotel loyalty program.

The online form is also the only accepted route: Wyndham states the call center, app, mobile site, and front desk cannot process one.

What about Marriott, Hyatt, and IHG?

None publishes a public hotel status match as of September 2026, and what each offers instead differs enough to take one at a time.

Marriott Bonvoy: an unpublished challenge, decided case by case

Marriott does not publish a match against rival hotel programs. It runs a status challenge it does not advertise, and the 2026 guides describe a consistent shape.

As reported, you call Marriott Bonvoy and ask. Approved members stay eight paid nights for Gold or sixteen for Platinum, inside the rest of the current month plus the following three.

Marriott's published matching runs through airline partners. United MileagePlus members at Premier Gold or above can match into Bonvoy Gold, and a JAL Mileage Bank partnership launched July 14, 2026 grants Bonvoy Silver or Gold to linked JAL elites.

World of Hyatt: corporate challenges rather than a public match

Hyatt does not offer a typical hotel status match, and that has held through 2026.

What exists is a corporate channel. Employees of participating companies may register, and the 2026 version grants Explorist for a 90-day trial.

Ten nights in that window holds Explorist into February 2028, and another ten reaches Globalist. Registration closes on December 31, 2026.

Hyatt does not publish which employers take part, so a travel manager will answer faster than a support line.

IHG One Rewards: targeted offers that arrive by email

IHG runs no public match. It does run fast-track challenges periodically, sent to selected members rather than posted.

A January 2026 offer shows the shape: register in advance, stay eight paid nights at $30 a night minimum between January 22 and March 8, and hold Diamond through the end of 2026.

Award nights and Points and Cash stays were excluded, and that offer has expired. Frequent Miler's write-up has the terms as they ran.

The nights are the real price of a status match, at whatever rate applies the day you book.

Autopilot does not manage status, points, or loyalty accounts. It acts on the cash side: once you add a directly booked hotel stay, Autopilot tracks the rate and reprices the reservation when it drops, so the nights you buy to finish a challenge cost less.

What documents do you need, and how long does approval take?

Every public match asks for the same two things: proof you hold the tier, and proof you have used it.

   Screenshot your current tier

   A screenshot of your account page showing your name, membership number, and elite tier is the standard evidence. A membership card or current account statement generally works too.

   Add proof of a recent stay

   Hilton asks for evidence of a stay with the program you are matching from, not just the status. A folio or stay-history entry is usual, and the lookback window is worth confirming first.

   Submit it the way the program specifies

   Hilton takes uploads through its status match page. Wyndham's terms make the online form the only accepted route, and Choice takes requests by email.

   Wait out the review

   Wyndham publishes a 5 to 7 day window. The others publish none, so plan around approval rather than count on it.

   Book the nights early

   The trial starts at approval, not at your first stay. A 12 or 14 night requirement inside 90 days needs planning from the first week.

Is a hotel status match worth it?

It comes down to whether you were going to stay those nights anyway.

A Choice match costs an email and no stays, and Best Western's works similarly. The only real cost is spending a once-per-lifetime match at the wrong moment.

Hilton and Wyndham are a different calculation. Twelve paid Hilton nights or fourteen qualifying Wyndham nights is genuine spend, and the tier pays off only if you keep travelling afterwards.
