How to Upgrade a Delta Flight: The 4 Routes (2026)

There are four ways into the front cabin on a Delta flight, and they work nothing alike.

One is earned through status, one you buy outright on a ticket you already hold, and one runs on miles or certificates.

The fourth is bidding, which Delta does not offer at all. Here is each route, what it costs, and how quickly it confirms, as of September 2026.

What are the four ways to upgrade a Delta flight?

Delta hands out and sells upgrades through four separate channels. Telling them apart is most of the work.

Each has its own currency, its own gatekeeper, and its own answer to the question that actually matters: is the seat yours yet, or are you still in a queue?

One rule cuts across all four: the fare you bought decides whether any of them are open to you. More on that below.

How do complimentary Medallion upgrades work?

This is the upgrade list, and it is the one route nobody can buy their way into.

Delta clears it in a published order topped by Medallion tier: Diamond first, then Platinum, Gold and Silver.

The clock differs by cabin rather than only by tier. Delta First opens 120 hours before departure for Diamond and Platinum members, while Delta Comfort clears for those two tiers shortly after ticketing when a seat is free.

Delta's Medallion upgrades page also notes that complimentary upgrades are not permitted into Delta Premium Select or Delta One on flights outside the US 50.

How do Delta's paid upgrade offers work?

This is the route open to everyone, status or no status.

After you buy a ticket, Delta offers you a price to move up on that same reservation. Pay it and the cabin is yours immediately, with no list and no waiting.

   Open your trip

   Delta's seat support page describes going to My Trips and looking for the upgrade offers banner at the top of the trip.

   Check the price on offer

   Offers cover Delta One, Delta Premium Select, Delta First and Delta Comfort, on eligible flights within the US and Canada, from the US to international destinations, and on most inbound international flights to the US.

   Know the deadline

   Delta sells post-purchase upgrades any time after a ticket is issued until 90 minutes before departure, or until the check-in window has closed.

   Check who else is on the booking

   Upgrades are sold flight by flight, and Delta states that all customers in the reservation must upgrade for the flight you select.

Two limits are worth knowing before you plan around this. Only itineraries wholly operated by Delta or Delta Connection are eligible, and Delta Basic customers cannot buy an upgrade at all.

If you change or cancel before the 24-hour check-in window opens, Delta says you may receive an eCredit for the value of the seat purchase.

Delta publishes no price schedule for these offers. The price is set per flight and it moves with demand, which is why the number you see today is not the number you will see next week.

Upgrade offers move by the minute, and catching the cheapest one is the whole point. Once you add your trip, Autopilot tracks Delta's upgrade offer price and claims it when it drops, for a 25% success fee and nothing if it finds nothing.

Can you bid on a Delta upgrade?

No. Delta does not run a bid-for-upgrade auction, and there is no place on a Delta booking to name your own price.

Delta's paid and complimentary upgrade pages describe fixed prices and a clearance order. Neither mentions bidding, as of September 2026.

Bidding is real. It is just mostly somewhere else, and The Points Guy's guide to upgrade bidding lists Delta among carriers that do not let you set your own bid amount, and names Hawaiian as the only US carrier running one.

Carriers that do take upgrade bids, per that guide, include:

• Aer Lingus, Air Canada and Air New Zealand
• Etihad Airways, Lufthansa and Singapore Airlines
• Virgin Atlantic, and Hawaiian Airlines, the one US carrier on the list

Many of those programs run on the same white-label platform, Plusgrade, which is why the bidding screens look so similar from airline to airline.

On a Delta ticket, the equivalent is simply the paid upgrade offer above. You are accepting Delta's price rather than proposing your own.

How do miles and upgrade certificates work on Delta?

Both exist, and both depend on upgrade inventory rather than on cash. That is the usual reason they do not clear.

Upgrading with SkyMiles

Delta runs two named paths. Upgrade with Miles is self-service, at booking in your Trip Summary or afterwards through the seat map on delta.com and the Fly Delta app.

Mileage Upgrade Awards go through Delta Reservations and reach partner metal, covering flights operated by Delta, Virgin Atlantic, Air France, KLM and Aeromexico.

There is no published chart. Delta's upgrades page states that prices vary by market and are subject to change without notice, so treat any fixed SkyMiles figure you see with care.

Self-service upgrades are also blocked after check-in, on partner-operated segments, and on segments departing the United Kingdom, France, India, Ghana or Honduras.

Regional and Global Upgrade Certificates

These are Choice Benefits, so they only reach the top two tiers. Delta states that certificates carry higher priority than complimentary upgrades.

• Platinum Medallion: four Regional Upgrade Certificates.
• Diamond Medallion: four Global, or eight Regional, or two Global and four Regional.
• Either type: a one-cabin upgrade above the cabin you bought, one certificate per passenger per one-way.
• Not valid on Delta Basic experiences.

Which Delta fares cannot be upgraded at all?

Basic fares, and in 2026 that phrase covers far more than the cheapest economy ticket.

Delta announced on July 8, 2026 that Delta First Basic, Delta Premium Select Basic and Basic Business had gone on sale, with the two premium products flying from September.

Delta's position is stated plainly in that release: customers who select the Basic travel experience are not eligible for product upgrades, though they may buy a seat assignment within their current product.

The practical effect is that a Basic fare closes all four routes at once. No complimentary upgrade, no paid upgrade, no certificate and no miles.

So the cabin on your boarding pass no longer tells you whether you can move up. The experience tier attached to it does.

Which upgrade route should you actually use?

It depends on the only two variables that matter: whether you hold status, and whether you need certainty.

• You hold Medallion status and the flight looks empty: let the complimentary list do its work, and keep your SkyMiles number on the booking.
• You need the seat confirmed now: the paid upgrade offer is the only route that answers immediately.
• You are Diamond or Platinum with certificates in hand: apply one early, because they clear ahead of complimentary upgrades.
• You are sitting on SkyMiles: price the mileage upgrade against simply buying the higher cabin outright before you commit.
• You bought a Basic fare: none of the above are open, and the only way up is a new ticket.

The one route that rewards patience is the paid offer, because its price is set per flight and keeps moving until someone buys the seat.

Check it more than once. The offer you dismiss in week one is rarely the offer sitting on your trip the week you fly.
